Introduction to English Interviews
As globalization is the current trend in companies, there are more companies that administer English interviews in addition to the interviews in native tongue. What is asked during the English interviews may not be so different from regular interviews, but the fact that one has to speak in a foreign language during the interview does put interviewees in a stressful situation.
There are different types and purposes to English interviews. A foreigner manager may conduct interviews, a foreigner and a native may conduct interviews, and a native manager alone may conduct interviews. Methods to interviews vary according to companies and fields. In foreign companies, a native HR manager may ask general questions and a foreigner manager may ask questions to check English ability. In some cases, interviews may be conducted only in English.
In Korean companies, English interviews are done to test English skills. However, in foreign companies, English interviews test not only English communication skills, but also the ability to adjust to the corporate environment of foreign company. Those planning to seek position through headhunters especially need to study interview techniques more in depth.
Interviews are usually done in small office spaces with two to three persons instead of special conference rooms. For information on different types of interviews, please refer to the "English Interview Types and Preparation" section.
When an interviewer is a foreigner, one needs to know their etiquette and everyday expression because they may have different culture, habits, and ways of thinking. Companies that conduct English interviews most likely need employees to communicate in English on the job. From answering simple phone calls to having to speak in English in everyday work life, different companies require different levels of English, so it is important that a candidate finds out what level of English the company requires.
